When the weather conditions are bad, Jeffco officials must decide whether to keep schools open, call a delay, or close the schools. How is this decision made?
The research states the snow day needs to have critical snowfall, so buses cannot go on their usual route, and kids who walk to school are at higher risk. Other research states that schools monitor incoming weather forecasts.
According to the Jefferson County website, the school district must follow certain criteria on a snow day. For example, if the weather becomes dangerous during school, families and staff will be notified by 6 a.m., and after-school activities will be canceled. The decision will be made by 1 pm and communicated to all families and staff.
The chief executive director, Jeff Gatin, said “The process we use is best described and outlined [Jeffco district guide] There is a team of individuals, including myself, that typically meet around 4 am on mornings when inclement weather is expected. Collectively, we decide, and then I inform and discuss the decision with the superintendent”. This information tells us that they use monitoring systems to see the amount of snowfall analyzing the weather for the school district to see if a snow day will be the case or not.
This is from the Jefferson County website “Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for cold and snowy weather. This includes hats, mittens or gloves, a scarf, a warm coat, and waterproof boots. It’s important to remember that bus routes may be delayed due to snow or ice, so students who take the bus should be prepared and dress appropriately for the cold weather.”
Out of 11 people surveyed, nobody has waterproof boots, one office staff has everything for cold snowy weather one of the AN staff says to wear a jacket and snow-appropriate shoes!
