Recalling Experiences

Mr. Abling, Interviewee

What do you think about Field Day?

“I think field day is awesome! I think Field Day is a wonderful time to play and pretend like we’re kids again.”

How would Field Day look like if AHS did one?

“If we did a Field Day, we would have a bunch of stations, we would have a bunch of competitions, [and] games throughout the day.”

Has AHS did anything like a Field Day?

“We’ve done them before. The way we did them before was we did a half day where we shortened the schedules like a bulldog day. [We] got rid of bulldog time completely, cause then you’ll only have 3 classes. And then we’d do each class for–I wanna say–an hour each; so we did 8 to 9 for second hour, 9 to 10 for fourth hour, 10 to 11 for sixth hour. Then we have lunch–we have like barbeque lunch–cookout. And then we started everything after lunch; we had a frisbee gold upfront, we did like a water balloon toss. We had a volleyball tournament in the gym–we only had one gym that we did it in, we didn’t have the remodel yet–then after that, we did a basketball tournament. I think we showed a movie in the auditorium… and then just a bunch of little games like what we did for [Community Time]!”

How long ago was this?

“18-19, so 2019. I wanna say it was May of 2019.”

Can Field Day influence or impact the AHS community?

“I think it can be huge! After the last one we did, everybody was super happy–y’know, the students got to see the teachers in a different light; a couple of kids threw water balloons at me, and they thought it was the funnest ting ever–yeah, it was super cool! One of your cousins got me with a balloon–he was a freshman–Isaac. It was really funny, he thought he was gonna get suspended. [But] yeah, so, with him, Isaac and I got to know each other that day. [Overall], it does huge things for the culture because–then the kids get to see the other kids in other light; they get to see new friends, they get to see the adults in a different way–just a fun time.”

Did teachers participate in these games and activities?

“Yes, so the way it worked was we had a teacher sponsor each event and activity [like Academy Time].”

Could you describe what field day is?

“To me, what a field day is, is it’s just a day where we don’t do classes, instead, we do games.”
