Homecoming week was very busy for STUCO. And the rally fell on the 19th of September. STUCO had to work hard to get it done. Mrs. Schuester said “We decide themes together as a class by voting within the student council”
This year was especially difficult because of some big changes within STUCO itself. “I was worried there would be resistance to having me as the new teacher,” Schuester said “and that I wouldn’t be taken seriously, but I think all of my students have been very receptive and respectful. And the hardest part has been reinventing the wheel a bit.“
Mrs. Schuester wanted to change things up. “At the beginning of homecoming, I told my kids, The most dangerous thing we can say is that we have always done it this way.” She said.
But despite the changes and trials, Schuester says. “Getting to facilitate school spirit and making Arvada High School the dream high school for my students. I think that’s the best part.”
In wanting to keep STUCO fair, Schuester says, “All votes are equally weighted, but we want the student body to vote on future dances. Not just within our class. People are very democratic and vote respectfully, and I feel everybody gets their ideas heard. It is a lot of energy though.”
To make students interested in the rally Stuco devised a plan. “We threw out t-shirts with gift cards in them. We also did a basketball game with firefighters to keep it entertaining.” Schuester says.
Homecoming week was very successful and exciting thanks to Mrs. Schuester and the rest of STUCO. “It takes every student to make the school the type of place you want to go to school in, even if you’re not involved in the student council. By coming to the events and having good school spirit you’re making our job easier and more fun.”
