Tuesday through Thursday at 530, our basketball team is putting in work to prepare for the season. Building their stamina and getting in shape by running the field as their warm up.
The Bulldogs went 9-14 last season and lost 6 seniors. Tre Kent’s thoughts on this are “Most of those seniors didn’t care about basketball since football was their main sport. These underclassmen skill-wise, aren’t as well but they have a better mindset than the 6 seniors we lost.”
Freshman, Jonny Prince, says “I want us to win a championship this year.” This is the kind of mindset the team wants.
The boy’s team says they are most looking forward to their matchup against Fort Lupton on a 6 year loss streak against them. The girls say they are excited to play against Englewood.
The girls team went 11-10 last season. One girl from the team says “Preseason helps me build my stamina and confidence to prepare for the season. We do lots of conditioning, shooting drills, and ball-handling drills. This helps us remember the basics before we start going into working on plays. It benefits old and new players.”
With the teams doing joint practices, it helps bond the bulldogs as a team physically and socially. Having a rough history against teams in Wyoming and Nebraska the bulldogs wonder if they’ll have a better chance as they are staying in state for their tournament.
Coach V has big goals and expectations for both teams’ seasons. Hiring a new assistant coach to help out will hopefully relieve some of the stress of coaching 3 teams and lead our teams to victory.
“Some of the things we do consist of running the field, doing cone drills, core workouts, and drills that help us build stamina and also help us with ball control,” Damien Hernandez says.
The girl’s team losing their star player, Emma N, will face more challenges this year. Emma averaged 16.6 ppg last season but sadly graduated. Now our 2 seniors, Taylor Dye and Carmen Medina will have to step up and lead the team.
