Being in high school, 7 hours of your day is already taken up with school. What time students actually leave the building varies with sports, night school, working on plays, playing an instrument, and so much more.
After all of this, many students have to go to work to pay for a variety of things. Davien Binns says “I work so i can support myself. I pay for gas, clothes, Apple Music, and my phone storage.”
Davien is on the basketball team so he can only work the weekends. Issac Martinez who is also on the basketball team but no longer works says, “I made $300 every 2 weeks and that was not enough to support everything i needed. I have to pay my car insurance and pay my car off. The best piece of advice i can give is to take advantage of any free time you have.”
Isaac worked at Urban Air and at the time, was getting paid under minimum wage.
“Subways an easy job to manage and I can do homework on my break. I also appreciate how flexible they are with my schedule” Sophia Ferrer says.
Sophia also applied to get elective credits for work, “I already have 0ver 120 hours for the semester so i can get a full elective credit.
Subway doesn’t have many employees as they only need one, maybe two, people working at a time. This is good for the employees they have because they get more hours they would compared to a place with a lot of workers.
Another Urban Air worker, Annastasia Ornelas, who manages girl and boys basketball and cheers gets paid 14.50 now and says “she has no expenses.”
Half of the Culver’s staff off of 72nd and Sheridan, goes to Arvada. This can make it easier for students to ask for help at work weather its taking shifts, help at work and more.
Everyone has different things they have to pay for, but we see that everyone is trying to make money which is making schedules very difficult.
However at Arvada, we provide an option to get up to 2 elective credits for working. If you talk to Ms. Accera, she will tell you that for every 60 hours you work, you will get .5 credit. Ms. Accera will have more information in her room if interested.
