The Arvada High School’s wrestling team competed in the February, 2025 state wrestling tournament.
Four Arvada High School students made it to state wrestling. A huge congratulations to Kyler Kissel, Samaya Carreron, Zahara Thompson, and Nahum Macias-Castillo.
We interviewed (junior) Zahara Thompson to get her take on state. “It was quite an experience. It was amazing seeing all the people and wrestlers together, having hundreds of eyes on you, and having your opponents warm up right next to you”
The two freshmen, Samaya and Kyler, making it to state set the precedent for their coming years. We interviewed Kyler Kissel on her take on making it to state as a freshman. “It was amazing just being there as a freshman. Being there with my teammates was fun, and it helped get my nerves out for the years to come.”
Typical tournament days are long, to further understand the tournament days, we interviewed (junior) Zahara Thompson. “I wake up at 5 am to get to the school and to take the team van to the tournament. When we arrive, we weigh in and eat as we start stretching out while I give new wrestlers pep talks. I run the girls through drills, after we warm up, we go back to our seats and wait for our bout numbers to come up. We warm up on the side of the mat, then wrestle. We go home hopefully with a medal and if not the mindset to do better next time.”
